Meet our Instructors!

Ty Smith

I fell in love with climbing the first day I went to New Heights. My wife and I walked in, bought a membership, all of our own gear and never looked back. We now own a home west of Tulsa where I built a personal climbing gym in a shed for my own training and routesetting creativity. I'm a lifelong athlete whose climbing style is influenced by a background in wrestling and pole vaulting, among other sports. I have been climbing for five years. For the first year I focused on rope climbing, but as I started to understand the nuances of bouldering I developed a passion for it. I absolutely love bouldering in the Ozarks, especially near Cowell, Arkansas.

I will use my knowledge and experience to help my clients gain more confidence in their movement, body positioning, technique, and route reading with an emphasis on improving outdoor bouldering abilities. I’ve been climbing for 4.5 years. My first year was mainly spent with ropes. Then fell in love with bouldering after understanding the nuances. My favorite place to climb is Font Red - Cowell. It is full of beautiful scenery, rocks, forest. Rural Ozarks. My favorite style of climbing is compression. Bouldering as a discipline.

My coaching style is unique since I have been a life long athlete in wrestling and pole vaulting. I have developed as a well-rounded person. I have also learned different aspects from past sports

I really want to help my clients gain more confidence in their movement, body positioning, technique, and route reading with an emphasis on improving outdoor bouldering abilities.

Mikey Conroy

My name is Mikey Conroy, and I got started climbing around summer of 2018 when this facility was built. It was right next to my house, so as a birthday present I got a membership, and I’ve been stuck climbing ever since.

My favorite place I’ve climbed is the Black Forrest in Kelseyville, California. Being in the mountains lost in nature is such an amazing feeling and I’d love to go back some day.

I truly love all styles of climbing, including slab. I find my self enjoying anything in the cave or an intense overhang the most though. There’s something about hanging nearly upside down that makes me feel so powerful and accomplished when finishing a boulder problem.

My coaching style is unique because I am much shorter than the average climber being only 5’4”, so I am able to bring a different perspective that most coaches aren’t able to. I have learned to adapt to any situation that seems not fitting for a short person and I’d love to share that with others.

I’ve often found myself saying “I’m just too short to do that move” or giving myself an excuse to give up. The truth is that you won’t ever have a disadvantage that will keep you from making it to the top. That’s what I love about climbing, there is always another way to get up the wall and I want to help others find that way.

Kate Friedl

I grew up doing gymnastics for about 10 years was introduced to climbing in high school when my friends invited me to New Heights and continued climbing through college. I began venturing outdoors to climb and love to hike and camp. I graduated paramedic school in 2008 and started working full time. I have been a paramedic now for over 15 years and lost a lot of free time to climb for many years due to the strenuous work hours but stayed active running, cycling, and exercising when I could. In 2021, I finally got to start climbing again and I never realized how much I missed it and the community! I have made so many new friends and love a full burnout session rope climbing. Top rope and sport climbing are the highlights of my week but I love to challenge myself to any type of climbing. Fitness and injury prevention are very important to me and I love to incorporate it into any sport approach.

I started coaching the Tulsa Climb Team which is our youth competitive team. While I still hold a paramedic license, retiring out of the medical field and into the amazing climb community has been the best opportunity I have been given. I have coached gymnastics in the past and have a lot of experience working with kids of all ages. Watching kids accomplish a new skill after working so hard to achieve it is the best reward to coaching because I can remember how amazing it felt.

My coaching style is patience and perseverance. Some things come easy and some things take extra time and focus. I encouraging thinking outside the box, finding different ways to accomplish a goal, gaining confidence in your body, and having fun. I love sharing climbing with newcomers as it was once shared with me and hope you feel as excited about climbing as I do at the end of the day!
